My first blog post ever!

Finally taking the plunge and starting a blog!

I hope to share a lot of fun and helpful ideas, strategies and activities to help teachers and parents engage children in ways that will help them socially and academically.

My latest idea was to make a modified spelling activity that could help my son learn age/grade appropriate words. He is great at phonics but struggles with higher level spelling that does not follow the rules of phonics.

It seems that the best way to teach this higher level spelling is by having children read, read  and read some more. I also know that practicing using and writing these words is important. In the end, children need to memorize most of the words they are going to write as phonics and spelling rules change or don't apply.

I have been using my modified spelling activities with my son for a while now and I am finding it to work nicely with him. The words I have chosen are 4th grade level words and high frequency words. I specifically chose words that I thought would be important for him to know.

I plan to have one activity packet for each letter of the alphabet.  It will take some time to get through each letter packet, about 1 week for each one, but I think it is worth it to take it slow and remain focused on specific words.

This is a work in progress and all of the word lists are not complete yet but word lists "a" and "z" are completed and are FREE if you want to give this approach a try for your 4th grader :)

All my best,

Cindy
